Tidbits: Highest point in Ohio
Summitted, September 1, 2012
Time Zone: GMT -6 hours
When to go:
There is only one route to the summit. The summit is located within the property of the Ohio Hi-Point Career Center and Vocational School. The gate is generally open from 7:30am to 9:00pm Monday through Thursday and until 4:30pm on Friday during the school year (early closing, around 4:00pm of so during the summer). You do not need permission to enter the site during the normal operating hours. After hours, you do need permission...if you call the center at 513-599-3010 they can let you know the specifics AND may even offer to leave the gate unlocked for you (as they did for me)!
Hotel and Climb Reservation:
No guide, permit, or trail reservations are required, but you do need to call if you are entering during off-hours (see above).
From the town of Bellefontaine, , go East on Route 540 for about 1/2 mile and the Hi-Point center is located on the right.
I was going to be traveling in Ohio on the weekend and called the Hi-Point Career Center and told them of my planned visit. They were very gracious and gave permission AND offered to keep the pedestrian gate unlocked. Upon arrival, the gate was unlocked and I walked the ~.5 mile road to the top. The summit is marked with both a plaque and a sign. I was fortunate to have the entire place to myself. Views were limited.
